Pirates Advance to State 8/10/2009 The Pirates advanced to the WBA State finals Sunday with wins over Abbotsford 14-8 and St. Croix 3-0. Friday night, the site host Abbotsford Merchants came out swinging and took a 2-0 lead but Prescott scored seven times in the 2nd to go up 8-2. Tony Gardner came in the 5th and shut the door down as the Merchants were within 3 at 11-8. Chris Terrazas hit a 3 run double to extend the lead and put the final nail in the coffin. Sunday was a different story. The Pirates were shut down early as St. Croix's pitcher was keeping our hitters off balance, inducing a lot of ground balls. But the Pirates scratched two across in the seventh as Nick Johnson's grounder the first scored Dillon Powell and Nick Thoen's double plated Terrazas. Terrazas also hit a two out single to push the score to 3-0 and that is all "Big Horse" Johnson needed as he only gave up 2 hits while striking out 10. NJ's pitching performance was stellar.
