Pirates Advance to State 8/10/2009
The Pirates advanced to the WBA
State finals Sunday with wins over Abbotsford 14-8 and St. Croix 3-0.
Friday night, the site host Abbotsford Merchants came out swinging and took a
2-0 lead but Prescott scored seven times in the 2nd to go up 8-2. Tony
Gardner came in the 5th and shut the door down as the Merchants were within 3 at
11-8. Chris Terrazas hit a 3 run double to extend the lead and put the
final nail in the coffin. Sunday was a different story. The Pirates
were shut down early as St. Croix's pitcher was keeping our hitters off balance
and inducing a lot of ground balls. But the Pirates scratched two across
in the seventh as Nick Johnson's grounder the first scored Dillon Powell and
Nick Thoen's double plated Terrazas. Terrazas also hit a two out single to
push the score to 3-0 and that is all "Big Horse" Johnson needed as he only gave
up 2 hits while striking out 10. NJ's pitching performance was stellar.
Pirates Begin Playoffs
8/6/2009 The
Pirates start their playoff adventure on Friday when they take on site
host Abbotsford Merchants at 7:30. Abbotsford was 6-4 in
Dairyland league play which was good for fifth place. Also in
the bracket are St. Croix Ravens from Solon Springs, WI and Glidden
Orioles. St. Croix finished tied for fourth place (10-6) in the
Independent league and Glidden won the Great Northern league with a
record of 9-1. The Pirates finished up with a St. Croix Valley
league best 13-3 and are the No. 1 seed. Mike Labarbera will
take the hill Friday looking to continue his success in the playoffs
after last year's gem he spun against Cumberland. If the Pirates
advance, look for Nick Johnson to toe the rubber. The team would like
to thank our fans and sponsors who supported us this year and we hope
to see you this weekend.
Pirates Finish Conference
7/26/09 The Pirates defeated
Bay City Saturday by a score of 9-3 to cap a 13-3 conference record which was
good for a Southern Division title and the leagues best overall record.
Gary Seifert started the game but left with elbow soreness where Chad Tousley
came in a gave the Pirates a much need pick me up. Tousley was able to
keep the Bomber's bats in check through four innings when Shawn Patnode came in
to close up shop. The Pirates were led by a red hot Nick Thoen with three
more hits and Chris Terrazas notched his third HR of the season. Now the
Pirates will play the waiting game to see which seed they will receive and where
they will begin their playoff journey. Three games remain on the schedule
as preparation games. The Pirates play River Falls down in Plum City on
Saturday and then head to Dundas on Sunday to take on the Dukes at 4 PM.
The following Wednesday Cottage Grove comes to town in the final tune-up.
We hope to see you all at the park to cheer on the Pirates in the playoffs.
Pirates to Battle Hastings
7/17/2009 The River Rumble always is a nice
attraction to fans from both sides of the boarder as the Pirates take on the
Hawks from Hastings on the Friday night of Rivertown Days. The Pirates are
5-1 after the All Star break and will look to carry the momentum versus the
Hawks. Mike Labarbera will be making his first River Rumble start and he
will be apposed by John Wilkes Booth. Not even kidding, the guy who kill
Lincoln is going to pitch against us, I don't know what to say about that except
I am a little nervous. Sunday the Pirates will play Southern Division
rival Plum City in what looks to be an important game for both teams. See
ya at the park.
3 Down, 5 To Go 7/8/09 The Pirates have entered a stretch
where they will play 8 games in 14 days and so far are 3-0 with wins
over Stillwater (3-1), Northfield (12-1) and Ellsworth (13-0). Gary
Seifert , Nick Johnson and Mike Labarbera all picked up wins while
only giving up one earned run in the process. Next up is River
Falls on Saturday which is slated to start at 1 PM in Prescott.
RF is currently 6-4 in conference play and is a team that gives the
Pirates fits. Next week the Pirates will play Burnsville
Tuesday, Miesville Thursday, Hastings (River Rumble) Friday and Plum
City Sunday. After the game on Sunday the team will raffle off a
"42 Plasma television.
SPAMTown Challenge
7/6/09 The Pirates had the
4th of July weekend off after a tough stretch of games in the SPAMTown Challenge
in Austin, MN. The Pirates went 1-2 as they beat the eventual champion
Chicago Wildcats 8-1, lost to Cold Spring 7-2 and Austin Blue Sox 6-1. The
competition was terrific and the pitching the offense faced was tough.
Nick Johnson shut down a very talented Wildcat team with a complete game
tallying 9 K's. Cold Spring threw their Ace against the local nine in the second
game and while the Pirates battled against the tough righty, the defense opened
a big inning in the 6th where the Springers scored 4 runs. The Blue Sox
were another athletic team that displayed a deep pitching bench as they kept
running out fine throwers. The Pirate bats couldn't come through with a
clutch hit as the team left many runners on base which was too bad because if
the team would have defeated Austin, they would have advance to Sunday's
championship round. All in all the team played well against some very good
teams.
Pirates Sweep Weekend
6/21/09
John Holt pitched a fine game against Menomonie on
Saturday as the Pirates defeated the Eagles from Menomonie 10-0.
Many Pirates hitters continued to swing the bat well as five players
had multiple hits led by Chris Terrazas with three. Mike
Labarbera also picked up another win in a rain soaked affair on
Sunday. In between a couple of rain delays the Pirate bats were
able to push across enough runs in tough conditions to give Osceola
their first loss in conference play. Nick Johnson came in 7th to
pick up the save. Word on the streets has it that Johnson, after
managing the Pirates to a 4-0 record, has taken over full time duties.
"If he is going to DH all season long he might as well manage" says an
outspoken Brady Randolph.
Bats Come Alive
6/14/2009
The stale Pirates bats finally broke loose this weekend as
they scored 37 runs in three games while taking three road conference games.
Jon Holt picked up a W in a 8-1 win over Plum City on Saturday. Chris
Terrazas and Nick Johnson each homered to pace the Pirates. Johnson
and Gary Seifert picked up W's as the Pirates went down to Elmwood and swept
the Expos 8-0 and 19-2. Jim French went yard twice along with dingers
from Terrazas, Johnson and Alex Ross. Next weekend a couple of the
North division teams visit Prescott as Menomonie and Osceola make the drive
down to Fire Hall Field. These two games will go a long ways in
determining a top seed from our conference.
Pirates Split Week
5/17/2009
The third week brought the Pirates first loss of the early
season as they were knocked off by Cannon Falls by a run, 7-6. Nick
Johnson and Thoen each had a HR but it wasn't enough as the Bears hit well with
two outs and killed a few Pirates rallies with solid defensive plays.
Sunday's victory versus St. Croix put the Pirates at 3-0 in conference and gave
Jonathan Holt his first win. Many Pirates pitched in to help score 12 runs
in seven innings as the team totaled 11 hits and collected 6 walks. Alex
Ross and Dillon Powell were on base all day long putting pressure on the
fielders which hasn't been seen in a Pirate uniform since.........EVER! Pirates Defeat Skeeters
5/10/09
The Pirates hosted Hager City on Sunday and picked up their
second conference victory by the score of 11-2. The game was tied 2-2 in
the 7th when the Pirates final touched up Skeeter starter with 6 runs and Jim
French added a three run blast in the 8th. Mike Labarbera threw 5 solid
innings only allowing one run and Gary Seifert picked up a save by throwing the
final four. Chris Terrazas continues to swing a hot bat with three more
hits and Seifert had four hits even though he hasn't touched a bat in two
seasons. After a rocky opener, the Pirates played better but there is
still a list rust to brush off.
Pirates Win Opener
5/02/09
The Pirates opened up versus Bay City last Saturday at
Firehall Field and the bats were hot early as the Pirates defeated the Bombers
21-11 in seven innings. Chris Terrazas had three hits including a HR, 2B
and 6 RBIs and newcomer Jim French had three hits as well. The Pirates
were a little rusty in the field which led to a few miss opportunities and the
pitching wasn't quite in midseason form. The Pirates play Hager City on
Sunday in Prescott and welcome back three players from college: Matt Magnan,
Gary Seifert and Matt Feriencek. |
