Pirates Lose State Championship Game The State Championship game didn't turn out as the Pirates had hope or even wished as they were defeated 16-0 by Chaseburg/Coon Valley. CCV brought their hitting shoes early and often as the Pirate pitching couldn't stop the bleeding. I would like to congratulate CCV on the title. To the Pirates and fans, this was by far our best season as an organization. Thanks to everyone who was at our games this weekend! I would personally like to thank Buck Hendrickson for all of the memories, he played his last game and was an original Pirate from 1995. Pirates Take Advantage of Mistake In the second round of the State Finals, the Pirates were facing a very strong Eau Claire Bear team. Nick Johnson was on the hill for the home team and pitched a complete game, 11 strike out performance while only surrendering one run. This performance earned the righty the Best Pitcher award for the State Tournament. The Pirates took one Bear mistake and turned it into 5 runs. Brady Randolph and Eric Carlson both singled home two runs after the crucial error to stake Johnson to a 5-0 lead. The Bears scored a run in the 8th but Nick Thoen matched that run with a home run in the bottom of the inning to extended the lead to 7-1. The Pirates were down 4-1 early but fought back to tie the game in the 6th as Brent Blegen drove in two runs on a single and then went ahead on Jason Amidon's single in the 7th. Nick Thoen had three hits while Amidon and Eric Carlson each had two. Luke Hoff pitched 8 2/3 innings and Nick Johnson picked up the save by striking out the final batter of the night. The Pirates advanced to play Eau Claire Saturday night. Nick Johnson threw his best game of the season to help the Pirates advance to the WBA State Finals. Johnson only allowed 3 hits to Tilden while striking out 11 but we will term his outing as effectively wild as he walked six Tigers. The offense surfaced in the 6th when Nick Thoen singled home Alex Ross and Brady Randolph doubled home Thoen. In the 7th, the Pirates put up a five spot and all with two outs. Johnson, Thoen, Randolph, Eric Carlson and Jason Amidon strung together five straight hits to give the Pirates some needed breathing room. After struggling the week before, the Pirates were able to put together a couple nice Ws against Ellsworth (11-10) and Hastings (8-6). Nick Johnson had a nice game against Ellsworth going 4-6 with the game winning HR and 2 2b's. Jason Amidon picked up the win in relief. Luke Hoff picked up another win against Hastings as he pitched 6 innings giving up 3 earned runs. The Pirates were down 4-0 early but battled back to take with a 5 run 4th and tacked 3 more on to increase the lead to 8-4. The Hawks scored 2 in the 7th but Johnson closed the door to give the Pirates their 18 win. Tri Pitches Pirates to Victory They say the best thing about baseball is when you struggle, there is always tomorrow. Well, this was exactly the case for the Pirates as they were in action Monday night against Rosemount. Josh Tri pitch 7 innings of one run ball and Eric Carlson (HR) and Alex Ross each had two hits as the Pirates defeated the Black Sox 8-1 in Miesville. The Pirates will play Ellsworth on Wednesday, Hastings on Friday and Cottage Grove Saturday to round out the week. Chad Tousley is scheduled to throw against Ellsworth as both teams sit a top the South Divison. Injury Riddled Week Slows Pirates Three games, three injuries and two loss to conference opponents Menomonie and Bay City. Justin Tobias pulled his groin in the victory over Red Wing, Matt Magnan severely sprained his ankle in the 11-5 loss to Menonomonie and Chris Terrazas sprained his thumb while trying to turn a double play in the loss at Bay City. But there are no excuses, the Pirates didn't play their best ball this weekend. With four games this week, the Pirates need to snap out of this funk. "Injuries are apart of the game but I've never seen a rash of injuries like this before, very disappointing," said the manager. The local nine had a 8 day break after playing 6 games in 5 days and looked refreshed as they defeated Red Wing 9-3. Chad Tousley picked up the W going 7 innings and while only giving up two runs. Nick Johnson and Eric Carlson each hit home runs to lead the Pirates while Chris Terrazas, Buck Hendrickson, Alex Ross and Nick Thoen all had a pair of hits. "Fundamentals were the name of the game, bunting, defense, pitching and timely hits" said Thoen after the game. Justin Tobias has been put on the 15 day DL after aggravating his groin allowing the team to call up Jose Reyes. Check out the article from the Red Wing Republican Eagle. The Pirates played in the Spamtown Classic down in Austin, MN this weekend. In pool play, the Pirates defeated Austin 4-2 and Tri-City 16-2 and lost to Spencer 9-5. The head-to-head tie breaker put the Pirates in the championship round where they faced off against Cold Spring. Down 4-0 after the first, the Pirates battled back but 2 run homer put the nail in the coffin to down Prescott 6-3. In the 3rd place game against Stillwater, the Loggers hit a game winning single in the bottom of the 7th to give the Pirates their 7th loss of the season. The Pirates 10 game winning streak came to an end Thursday as they were defeated by a score of 4-1 to a very athletic Burnsville team. Luke Hoff picked up his first loss of the season. The offense had a few chances to help out Hoff's cause but couldn't get the allusive clutch hit. There were a few defensive miscues on double steals that cost the Pirates a few runs a that will definitely have to cleaned up before playoffs come knocking. Didn't help that the webmaster couldn't field his position on a bunt that allowed Burnsville to load the bases. "Horsesh#t!" said the webmaster. Chad Tousley and Nick Johnson each pitched well to help the Pirates sweep Plum City to move to 8-1 in conference play. Prescott won 9-3 (Sat.) and 5-0 (Sun.). Mike Soma had a HR, 2B and 5 rbi's and Chris Terrazas, Johnson and Alex Ross each had a pair of hits on Saturday to pace the offense. On Sunday, Johnson and Brady Randolph each had two hits and Justin Tobias drove in two key runs to extend the lead to 5 in the 8th inning. The Pirates play in Burnsville at 7:30 on Thursday and host Cottage Grove on Saturday at 1, see you at the park. I really don't know where to start. The Pirates drove to Spring Valley for a baseball game and a softball game broke out. Mix in that with an umpiring performance like no other and you end up with a Pirates victory over the Hawks, 21-14. At one point the local nine were down 10-6 but they kept stinging the ball all over the ball park. Jason Amidon came in relief of Josh Tri to pitch 6 1/3 quality innings, hats off to him. "It was a good thing we kicked the extra point to make it a one possession lead" said Nick Thoen. There were too many offensive highlights to write about. The Pirates picked up a pair of conference victories by scores of 19-6 against Elmwood and 8-7 against Hudson. The offense continues to improve as many players had good weekends including 3 HRs by Eric Carlson, 5 hits from Chris Terrazas and Nick Johnson and 4 hits from Nick Thoen and Alex Ross. Chad Tousley and Johnson picked up the W's and DJ Eggers recorded a save against Hudson. The fighting 9 will play in Spring Valley on Wednesday and then play a pair against Plum City next weekend. The Pirates moved to 3-1 in conference play with a 7-1 victory against Bay City at Fire Hall Field. Chris Terrazas had three hits including a grand slam that put Prescott up 5-0 in the 3rd inning. Luke Hoff pitched 6 innings giving up one unearned run while striking out 4 and Josh Tri picked up the save with 3 scoreless innings. The crowd pleaser of the day was Nick Johnson's over the head diving catch robbing Shane Strain of an extra base hit. Prescott plays in Miesville against Rosemount on Thursday starting at 8. The Pirates beat Ellsworth 17-2 Monday to take the championship of the Plum City Tournament. Chris Terrazas, Alex Ross and Nick Johnson combined for 12 hits to pace the offensive attack. Chad Tousley pick up the W going 5 innings while giving up a 2 run homer. On Sunday, the Pirates played terrible and spotted Hudson a 9-0 lead but they kept chipping away and Nick Johnson's screamer to center plated 3 to win the game in the bottom of the 7th. Matt Magnan and Jason Amidon had 3 hits a piece and Pat Most picked up the W. Hoff Throws Gem in Pirates Victory The Pirates evened their conference record to 1-1 with a 3-2 victory over the Braves of Osceola. Luke Hoff seems to be in midseason form as his location was excellent and his slider kept the Braves off balance the entire night. Mike Soma, Nick Johnson and Brady Randolph each had RBIs and Johnson picked up an adventurous save by pitching the 9th. The Pirates face Stillwater Sunday at 1:00 and will have a full roster as Chris Terrazas, Alex Ross and Justin Tobias are back from DIII regionals. Pirates Lose Conference Opener The Pirates had trouble generating any offense Sunday as the Pirates dropped their conference opener to Ellsworth 5-1. Nick Johnson started for the Pirates and took the loss as he is still trying to find his rhythm on the mound after a 4 year layoff. Matt Magnan and Mike Soma each had a pair of hits in a losing effort. Nick Bayer picked up the win for the Hubbers. Offense Arrives as Pirates Beat Hampton 13-1 After a slow beginning, the Pirates offense finally hit it stride as they were able to get into the Cardinals bullpen. Mike Soma hit his first home run of the season and Jason Amindon had a nice day a the plate collecting 3 hits. Luke Hoff pitched 5 innings picking up the W and DJ Eggers picked up the save by pitching the final 3 innings. The 10 run rule ended the game in the 8th. On a blustery day at Firehall field, the Pirates dropped the season opener to Cannon Falls 8-6. The Pirates took a 6-5 lead into the 9th but failed to secure the win. Nick Johnson and Nick Thoen each were 3-5 to pace the Pirate offense. The team's next game is Saturday at Hampton at 1:00. |
