Pirates Advance to State

The Pirates played very well this weekend as a number of players contributed to victories over Cumberland and Osceola to advance to the WBA state finals.  Mike Labarbera and John Holt each threw complete games and combined to give up one run over 18 innings.  Offensively the Pirates were sharp as the whole lineup produced at different points of both games.  As the final SCVBL member left in the WBA playoffs, the local nine with play Brill in Ashland on Friday at 6:30.  Nick Johnson is set to start the opening game.

Pirates Prepare for Playoffs

We would first like to congratulate Bay City, Menomonie, Hudson, River Falls and Osceola for making it to the WBA playoffs.  The Pirates are seeded #2 in Osceola and will play Cumberland on Saturday, August 9th at 12:00.  If they were to advance, they would play the winner of Chippewa Falls - Osceola on Sunday, August 10th at 12:00.  To prepare for this years playoffs, I've schedule two-a-days on Tuesday and Thursday and conditioning on Monday, Wednesday  and Friday.  Pitchers and catchers report for camp on Sunday.

Pirates Clinch Playoffs

This weekend saw the Pirates fall 1-0 to Menomonie and sweep Elmwood 5-3 and 6-4 which essentially clinches a WBA playoff berth.  It was a quiet weekend for the bats as the team struggled with men in scoring position but that is baseball.  To the position players credit, they only committed one error all weekend when Justin Tobias took a would be DP ball to the face.  Once again the pitchers were the focal point as John Holt, Josh Tri and Nick Johnson all pitched exceptionally well.

Pirates Sweep Week

The Pirates went 4-0 last week with road victories at Burnsville (5-4), Northfield (9-0), Cannon Falls (10-5) and Bay City (7-4).  Now at 11-4 with a SCVBL record of 6-1, the Pirates enter a very tough stretch of games beginning with Red Wing on Tuesday.  The weekend brings the Pirates to Austin, MN to compete in the SPAMtown Challenge where their first three games will be against Chicago, Ill, Minnetonka, MN and Austin (Blue Sox).  If the Pirates win their bracket, there will be a four team championship bracket on Sunday.

Pirates Win Close One

The Pirates defeated Burnsville Tuesday night 5-4.  The offense supplied Jon Holt with three runs in the first on an rbi double by Nick Johnson and a solo HR from Brady Randolph.  Brian Johnson added an RBI single in the 5th and Randolph hit a Sac fly in the 7th propel the Pirates to the W.  Holt pitch the complete game (7 innings) as he settled down after a rocky beginning.  Tonight the Pirates play in Northfield starting at 7:30.  Nick Johnson will be on the bump for the local nine.

Busy Week for Pirates

Pirates have four games on the schedule this starting today with a game at Burnsville.  The last few contests with the Bobcats have been very competitive where the Pirates have come away winless.  Should be a good game.  Wednesday the Pirates travel to Northfield to play a very good Knights squad.  The weekend features the Pirates in Cannon Falls on Friday and at rival Bay City where the local nine will try to improve their division record to 6-1.  Gas up the tanks boys, our next 11 are on the road.

Pirates Lose Championship Game

The Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Menomonie Monday night, but it wouldn't hold up as the Eagles scored 5 times in the 6th and 3 more in the 7th to defeat the fighting 9.  Chad Tousley pitched a great game, can't say much more than that.  In the semifinal game, Jon Holt shut down Hudson over 6 innings as the Pirates scored early and often to defeat a good River Rats squad 9-1.  Nick Johnson had three hits and a three run homer.  In the first game, the Pirates connected on five home runs on way to outscoring Bay City 13-7.  Mike Labarbera picked up the win with 7 solid innings.

Pirates Outlast Blues 5/11/2008

The offense continues to struggle early on but the pitching continues its strong ways as Mike Labarbera and Nick Johnson held Plum City scoreless for 14 innings.  Larbarbera broke the scoreless drought with a two run single in the top of the 14th to plate Matt Magnan and Jason Amidon.  Chris Terrazas added another run with a single and Johnson picked up the W after relieving Larbarbera in the 7th.  The Pirates move to 1-1 in the SCVBL and overall.  The La Crosse Athletics come to town Saturday which will start after the High School game.

Pirates Opener Unsuccessful 5/4/2008

The Pirates season opener didn't start on the right foot as the St. Croix Ravens defeated Prescott 4-0.  The Ravens SP Jay Gagner held the bats at bay by only allow one hit over 9 innings.  It is safe to say there will be better games ahead as the Pirates are waiting on 4 starters still at school.
